The government of India, from 2025, is redefining its old age, widow, and handicap pension schemes. Thus, the government has initiated these changes, among others, to provide financial opportunities for the economically weaker sections of society and improve their livelihood lives. This system came into effect on 22 February 2025. In this article, we will discuss the new rules, benefits, and application procedures in detail.
Objective of the scheme:
The scheme aims to economically empower the weaker sections. The senior citizens, widows, and the disabled fall within this category. The government has initiated several new rules to further the transparency and benefit of these schemes.
Main Changes In Pension Rules:
1.Increased Pension Amounts
- Increased monthly pension for widowed women by cc,000.
- This has now been brought up to 10,000 for the month for severely disabled persons. Old-age pensions have also been raised to relieve the elderly.
2. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
- All beneficiaries will be sending their pension money directly into their bank account.
- This reduces corruption and makes it transparent.
3. Changes In The Eligibility Criteria
- Only those people with an annual family income of Rs. 1 lakh or less will be eligible now. The minimum limit of disability has now been made at 40 percent (earlier it was 60).
4. Improved Application Process
- Simplified the online application process.
- A beneficiary can also visit the nearest Panchayat or Municipal Corporation office to apply.
5. Mandatory digital payments
- Mandatory digital payments for all pensioners.
- This will ensure timely payments without needing cash transactions.
