The provisions for gig workers in Budget 2025, announced by the Central Government, are wide-ranging and important. Presenting the budget in Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the aim is to provide identity cards and registration to gig workers so that they receive social security and health benefits. It is expected that this scheme will help around 1 crore gig workers. The new features of the EPS-95 pension scheme were also discussed.
Importance Of EPS-95 Pension Scheme
EPS-95 (Employees Pension Scheme 1995) is the most significant plan available to give financial security to organized sector employees retiring from the position. The scheme provides for contributions made by employees as well as employers consequently locking in the pension fund. The scheme is of utmost significance for such employees who have retired having completed their service and now require financial security thereafter.
Provisions For Gig Workers In Budget 2025
- Identification Card and Registration: The government decided to implement a special scheme for gig workers, whereby gig workers would be supplied identity cards and registration on an E-Shram portal.
- Social Protection: This scheme shall endorse social security benefits to gig workers, thus enhancing their financial condition.
- Health Insurance: Coverage for health insurance will be granted for gig workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).

The Labor Minister said that the provisions made in Budget 2025 would stand tall as a remarkable milestone towards the safety and welfare of gig workers. He stated, “Gig workers are an integral part of our society, and they earn rights and protection.”
