The retirement age for government regular employees has always been a burning topic. It had gone viral recently on social media that the central government has changed the retirement age from 60 to 62 years. This news created much interest among the government staff and the general public. The government has since rejected these claims, clarifying that no such proposal is under consideration at this time.

The present age of retirement for central government employees is 60 years. This current rule was finally implemented in the year 1998 after the retirement age was raised from 58 to 60 years. Thereafter, it has not been changed in any manner. Recently, it was said in social media that the retirement age was to be increased to 62 years, effective from April 1, 2025. This rumor was coined as the “Retirement Age Increase Scheme”. However, called a false claim by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The retirement age of state government employees is under consideration for extension in various states as well. For example:
- Telangana: The discussion is about increasing the retirement age to 65 years.

What Does The Government Say?
The central government has clarified that currently, there is no proposal in the Parliament to increase the retirement age or decrease it. On the contrary, it means to promote employment for the youth and fill in the present vacancies. The matter of retirement age being discussed in the backdrop among the government employees is presently a baseless issue. The central government clarified that there shall be no changes in the present rules.
