What Is Fixed Medical Allowance (FMA)?

It is an allowance paid on a monthly basis to retired central government pensioners to meet outpatient medical expenses.

Eligibility For FMA?

  • Retired central government employees covered under NPS can avail of FMA.
  • Those who should have been eligible for the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) but are residing outside its area of coverage.
  • They should also refrain from utilizing any CGHS facility.
  • Other government sectors or states may have different norms.

FMA Payment

The FMA rate for NPS retirees has been fixed at Rs 1,000 per month, the same as that of old pension scheme coverees. However, the FMA amount shall be credited to the pensioner’s bank account directly every quarter. “Here it is also clarified that the FMA for September to November will be disbursed in the first week of December.

Jeevan Pramaan Patra

To continue getting FMA starting December, retiring employees will have to submit Jeevan Pramaan Patra. Life certificate is to confirm that the pensioner is currently alive and able to receive benefits.

Life Certificate is a document which gives proof that the pensioner is alive.
